Nigeria and Canada will kick off their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaigns on Thursday in Melbourne, Australia, in a match that promises to be one of the most closely contested of the group stage.
The Super Falcons are the 11-time African champions and have long been one of the continent’s powerhouses. However, they have yet to translate their continental success to the world stage, having never made it past the round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup.
Canada, on the other hand, are the reigning Olympic champions and have reached the podium in each of the last three Summer Games. They are a well-rounded team with a strong attacking and defensive unit.
The two teams have met twice in friendlies in the past year, with Canada winning the first match 2-0 before the sides played to a 2-2 draw three days later.
The Nigerians will need to be at their best if they want to upset the Canadians and get their World Cup campaign off to a winning start.
“This is a big match for us,” said Nigeria captain Asisat Oshoala. “We know Canada is a good team, but we are also a good team and we believe we can win. We have been working hard in training and we are ready for the challenge.”
