Arsenal’s pursuit of Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk has hit a roadblock as the Ukrainian club has rejected two bids from the Gunners. Reports have also emerged of London rival Chelsea attempting to hijack a deal for the 22-year-old.
While Mudryk has hinted at a move through social media activity, there has been no indication that Arsenal will make a third bid. The sticking point in negotiations is the transfer fee, with Shakhtar reportedly demanding £88.2 million ($120.6 million) for the winger – a fee that would make Mudryk Arsenal’s record signing.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta commented on the difficulty of competing with clubs like Manchester City, Chelsea, and Manchester United in the transfer market. “Valuation has to be made between the selling club and the buying club,” Arteta said.
“It is difficult but as well, it shows a lot of clubs with a lot of financial power to spend big amounts and we have to compete with them. We have to be smart, we have to see for good opportunities as well. We have to be attractive for players.”
Shakhtar’s training camp in Turkey begins on Monday, January 9, and Mudryk is expected to be a part of the squad. However, the club’s deputy sporting director, Carlo Nicolini, has noted that “many clubs have taken an indirect interest in Mudryk, without an official offer.
There have been a lot of phone calls.” Nicolini added that he believes Italian teams are hesitant to invest in a player like Mudryk due to his worth and the lack of “courage in investing in such a profile.”
The confirmation of Shakhtar’s squad for the training camp, which will be announced on the day of departure, will provide insight into the status of negotiations between the club and Arsenal.
If Mudryk travels with his teammates to Turkey, it is likely that no agreement has been reached with the Gunners. However, if Mudryk is left out, it could indicate that a breakthrough has been made in negotiations and the transfer saga is drawing to a close.
