Arsenal have been dealt a blow in their pre-season preparations with the news that Reiss Nelson is injured.
Nelson, who signed a new contract with the Gunners earlier this summer, is reportedly suffering from a minor toe injury that could keep him out for a few weeks.
The 22-year-old did not travel with the rest of the Arsenal squad to the USA for their pre-season tour, and it is now clear why.
Nelson had been hoping to kick on this season and make a bigger impact in the first team. He made some appearances off the bench last season, but he was never able to nail down a regular starting spot.
With a new long-term deal in his pocket, Nelson will be hoping to make a strong start to the new campaign. However, his injury could scupper those plans.
It is not ideal for Nelson to be missing out on pre-season training. He will now have to work hard to get fit and back up to speed before the start of the Premier League season.
Mikel Arteta has spoken highly of Nelson in the past, and he believes that the young winger has the potential to be a “special” player. However, he will need to be fit to show Arteta that he was right.
Any setback in pre-season is a nightmare for players, and Nelson will be desperate for this to clear up quickly and not hinder his progress any more.
Arsenal have a number of other attacking options available to them, but Nelson’s absence will be a blow. He is a talented player who has the potential to make a big impact in the Premier League.
Hopefully, he will be able to recover from his injury quickly and get back to playing football.
