Arsenal’s Signing of Kai Havertz Not His First Choice, Claims Journalist
Arsenal recently unveiled Kai Havertz as their first major summer signing, but reports now suggest that the Gunners were not the German star’s initial preference.
After finishing as runners-up in the 2022/23 Premier League season, Arsenal is determined to strengthen their squad and continue their challenge for top honors, now with the added incentive of Champions League football.
While a blockbuster move for Declan Rice from West Ham is on the verge of being finalized, Arsenal has already bolstered their attacking options by securing the signature of Kai Havertz from Chelsea.
The 24-year-old forward made the switch across London after spending three years at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea sought to balance their books by offloading several high-profile players, including Kalidou Koulibaly and N’Golo Kante.
Interestingly, Havertz was initially linked with a move to Real Madrid, as the Spanish giants were in search of a replacement for the departing Karim Benzema.
However, Chelsea’s asking price deterred Real Madrid’s interest, leaving Arsenal as the sole contenders for Havertz’s signature. The Gunners reportedly agreed to a fee of £65 million for the talented German.
Despite his move to Arsenal, it has now been revealed that Havertz’s first choice was actually a transfer to the Bernabeu. Real Madrid had shown interest in him during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, and it was widely believed that Havertz envisioned himself moving to the Spanish capital once he left Stamford Bridge.
However, Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, played a significant role in securing the deal, causing Havertz to abandon his Real Madrid dream and opt for the Gunners instead.
Nizaar Kinsella, a journalist, shared insights about the transfer during an episode of the Inside Arsenal podcast.
Kinsella revealed that Havertz had always dreamed of playing for Real Madrid, and it was expected that the Spanish giants would make a move for him this summer.
However, due to financial constraints caused by the pandemic, Real Madrid was unable to pursue the transfer, leading Havertz to choose between Chelsea and Arsenal. Ultimately, Arsenal emerged as the destination for the talented forward.
Arsenal is acquiring a player of immense quality in Havertz, who will be eager to prove himself after not fully realizing his potential during his time at Chelsea.
Despite his iconic winner in the 2021 Champions League final, Havertz often found himself played out of position at the spearhead of Chelsea’s attack.
Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s manager, will be tasked with unlocking Havertz’s true talent at the Emirates Stadium, and if successful, the £65 million price tag may prove to be a bargain for the Gunners.
