Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s tumultuous spell at Stamford Bridge appears to be nearing its end, with the former Arsenal striker reportedly sealing a move to Ligue 1 outfit Marseille.
Since his £10 million transfer from Barcelona in September 2022, Aubameyang has struggled to find his footing at Chelsea, managing just three goals in 21 appearances.
His struggles were further compounded when he was omitted from the Champions League squad in February due to the influx of January signings.
Now, with the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino as the new Chelsea manager, Aubameyang’s chances of securing a regular starting spot seem even slimmer, leading the 34-year-old to seek an exit from the club.
Throughout the summer, the Gabonese international has been exploring potential destinations, and a move to the Saudi Pro League had been previously speculated. However, recent reports from RMC Sport suggest that Aubameyang has reached an agreement with Marseille on a two-year deal, with the option of extending it to a third season.
While the deal is still subject to formalization through ongoing discussions between Marseille and Chelsea, it holds the promise of an instant return to the Champions League for Aubameyang, as Marseille secured a commendable third-place finish in the previous season.
For Chelsea, offloading Aubameyang is seen as a means to alleviate the wage bill and make room for further signings before the transfer window closes.
Already, Pochettino has been proactive in bolstering the squad, securing the services of six first-team additions, including talents like Christopher Nkunku, Andrey Santos, Malo Gusto, and Nicolas Jackson.
All four new signings are set to join the Blues’ 29-man squad for their pre-season tour in the United States, where they are scheduled to face a series of five friendlies, including a matchup against League Two newcomers Wrexham on Thursday, followed by fixtures against Newcastle, Brighton, and Fulham as part of the new Premier League summer series.
As Aubameyang’s departure nears its conclusion, both Chelsea and the player himself will be looking to move on from what has been a challenging period at Stamford Bridge.
For Marseille, securing the signature of an experienced forward like Aubameyang could prove to be a significant boost to their Champions League aspirations for the upcoming season.
