Arsenal Engage in ‘Positive’ Talks with Eredivisie Club over £42m-rated Target
Arsenal Football Club is currently involved in what is being described as ‘positive’ discussions with Ajax regarding their pursuit of highly-rated defender Jurrien Timber, according to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano in an exclusive interview with GIVEMESPORT.
Although Arsenal’s initial bid for the talented 22-year-old, who has been valued at £42 million by Transfermarkt, was turned down, the club remains committed to reaching an agreement.
Once a primary defensive target for Manchester United, Timber is now within Arsenal’s reach following his departure from Ajax under former manager Erik ten Hag.
However, according to The Times, Arsenal’s first offer for the Utrecht-born prospect was rejected. Despite this setback, talkSPORT reports that the Arsenal board maintains confidence in securing a deal with the Dutch giants.
The Guardian has also reported that while Timber is enthusiastic about a move to England, Ajax is demanding a fee exceeding £30 million for one of their most prized assets.
Considering Timber’s development through Ajax’s youth system, it is understandable that the club is reluctant to let him go for less than what they believe he is worth. Nonetheless, Romano has provided an update stating that internal discussions between the two clubs are progressing well.
When asked about Arsenal’s pursuit of Jurrien Timber, Romano revealed, “Yes, I believe they will submit another bid. There are ongoing talks between Arsenal and Ajax, and from the player’s perspective, the conversations have been very positive. It seems that a concrete deal between Arsenal and Ajax for Jurrien Timber is in the works, with the player also expressing his enthusiasm.”
The potential signing of Jurrien Timber would be a significant boost for Arsenal, who competed fiercely with Manchester City throughout the 2022/23 season but narrowly missed out on major honors.
During this period, Arsenal suffered a setback when their star defender William Saliba sustained an injury, highlighting the need for reinforcements in their defensive ranks.
Timber perfectly fits the profile of the player Arsenal requires. While he possesses the versatility to play on the right side of defense, his primary position is as a center-back.
Throughout his time with Ajax, Timber has made 121 appearances and has been an influential figure in their domestic success, except for the 2022/23 season.
