In what appears to be an inevitable departure, it seems highly likely that Manchester City will part ways with their Portuguese full-back, Joao Cancelo, during the upcoming summer transfer window. After surprising many by loaning him out to Bayern Munich last season, it appears that Cancelo’s future at the Etihad Stadium is bleak.
Previous reports from Sport have indicated that Pep Guardiola’s side is prepared to offload Cancelo, and there have been ongoing rumors suggesting that Arsenal is interested in acquiring his services for a fee not exceeding £26 million.
While the speculation surrounding this potential transfer has recently quieted down, respected journalist Dean Jones has shed light on Arsenal’s persistent interest in Cancelo.
Moreover, and rather intriguingly, it seems that Manchester City would not oppose the idea of their talented defender joining forces with Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side.
Speaking on Chasing The Transfer, Jones highlighted Arsenal’s pursuit of Cancelo and emphasized Manchester City’s willingness to let him join a Premier League rival.
Jones stated, “Absolutely, they have their eye on this. Arteta knows where to go shopping when he wants to level up the levels of his own squad. And Cancelo at Man City is the perfect place for him to pick up a great talent.
Ready to leave. And Man City are willing to let him go to another Premier League club. People constantly keep questioning whether they’re going to keep doing this.”
It is somewhat surprising that Manchester City would be willing to part ways with such a talented player and potentially strengthen a direct competitor like Arsenal.
The decisions to loan out Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko last season initially raised concerns about Guardiola’s squad depth. Furthermore, Cancelo has been described as an “incredible” performer during his time at Manchester City.
However, City’s resilience and dominance in the latter stages of last season, even without Cancelo, demonstrated their ability to function effectively without the Portuguese international.
It is this confidence in their squad and their continuous desire to improve that makes them untroubled by the prospect of Cancelo joining another Premier League club, including Arsenal.
Manchester City’s unwavering belief in their own abilities, coupled with their meticulous planning and strategic approach to player transfers, has led them to adopt a seemingly nonchalant attitude towards the movements of rival teams. They firmly believe that if they are willing to let a player go, they will have a better plan in store, regardless of where the player ends up.
As City look set to continue their dominance and seek further improvement in the transfer market, it becomes increasingly evident why they are untroubled by the prospect of Cancelo plying his trade elsewhere in the Premier League.
Despite his undeniable talent and past contributions to their success, Guardiola’s side has evolved into a well-oiled machine, rendering Cancelo’s potential departure a mere ripple in their grand scheme.
