Two powerhouses of women’s football will face off in the opening match of Group B at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Thursday in Melbourne, Australia.

Nigeria, the 11-time African champions, will be looking to finally break through on the world stage after never having advanced past the round of 16 at the Women’s World Cup.

The Super Falcons will face a Canada side that is the reigning Olympic champion and has reached the podium in each of the last three Summer Games.

The two teams have met twice in friendlies in the past year, with Canada winning the first match 2-0 before the sides played to a 2-2 draw three days later. The Nigerians will need to be at their best if they want to upset the Canadians and get their World Cup campaign off to a winning start.

“This is a big match for us,” said Nigeria captain Asisat Oshoala. “We know Canada is a good team, but we are also a good team and we believe we can win. We have been working hard in training and we are ready for the challenge.”

Canada coach Bev Priestman is also expecting a tough match.

“Nigeria is a very good team,” said Priestman. “They have a lot of experience and they are always dangerous. We know we will have to be at our best to beat them.”

The match is sure to be a close contest, and it could be a preview of a potential quarterfinal clash between the two teams. The winner of the group will also be in a strong position to advance to the knockout stages.

The match kicks off at 10:30 p.m. ET on Thursday at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.
