Chelsea Football Club is set to make their first signing of the summer as manager Mauricio Pochettino prepares to welcome Christopher Nkunku to Stamford Bridge.

Reports suggest that a deal has been in place for the playmaker since January, although an official announcement is yet to be made by the club.

Pochettino aims to revamp Chelsea’s attacking options during the transfer window, with Romelu Lukaku showing a desire to continue his stay at Inter Milan and showing reluctance to return to the Premier League. As a result, the Blues are assessing various strikers, including Lautaro Martinez and Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta.

In addition to their pursuit of a traditional number 9, Chelsea is also exploring options for players who can operate off the central striker. Nkunku’s arrival is expected to fulfill that specific role, as the French international is set to join the club in a deal worth up to £63 million, representing a significant coup for Chelsea.

According to CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs, the announcement of Nkunku’s signing could take place this week, with the deal having been finalized some time ago.

Initially brought in to provide versatility in the final third due to his ability to play across the forward line, Nkunku now appears to be a direct replacement for Kai Havertz.

Meanwhile, Arsenal has expressed interest in signing Havertz from their London rivals. The German international is reportedly open to the move and keen to work with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

ESPN reports that Havertz has informed Chelsea of his intention not to extend his contract, making a £60 million deal more likely.

Havertz, who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen, faced difficulties adapting to the Premier League, particularly due to frequently playing out of position as a makeshift striker, which did not suit his strengths.

Nkunku, however, has the opportunity to observe and learn from Havertz’s experiences, and former French international Bixente Lizarazu believes that the playmaker will have no issues adjusting to life at Chelsea.

Lizarazu expressed his confidence in Nkunku, stating, “His development has been rapid and spectacular. He has become a versatile player capable of operating in various attacking positions.

This versatility makes him strong and valuable to the team.” He added, “His confidence and freshness enabled him to excel at Leipzig, where he assumed more responsibility. Now, he seems ready for the next step in his career.”

As Chelsea seeks to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season, the imminent arrival of Christopher Nkunku is expected to provide a significant boost to their attacking options.

The talented playmaker’s versatility and impressive performances at RB Leipzig suggest that he could make a seamless transition to the Premier League under Pochettino’s guidance.
