According to recent reports, former Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez has made contact with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, expressing his desire for a return to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Sanchez, who originally joined Arsenal in 2014, enjoyed a sensational spell at the club, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s top performers. However, his decision to force a move to Manchester United under Jose Mourinho in January 2018 left a bitter taste among Gunners fans.

Since departing Arsenal, Sanchez has struggled to replicate his previous form. However, fresh reports from Chile suggest that the 34-year-old is eager to rediscover his best form at his former club.

Currently plying his trade at Marseille in France, Sanchez has been hailed as a “superstar” by Ligue 1’s official website following an impressive season, where he contributed 18 goals and three assists across all competitions. As he approaches the final year of his contract, the Chilean is said to be contemplating his future options, with a potential return to Arsenal reportedly on his mind.

Chilean newspaper LaTercera asserts that Sanchez and his representatives personally reached out to Mikel Arteta to explore the possibility of a reunion at Arsenal as the team seeks to mount a title challenge in the upcoming season.

While Arteta allegedly holds admiration for Sanchez, given their previous playing experience together, he has made it clear that a return to the Emirates is not in the cards for the Chilean forward this summer.

According to the report, the door to Sanchez’s return has been firmly closed by Arteta and the Arsenal hierarchy.

From a strategic standpoint, Arteta’s decision appears justified. Although Alexis Sanchez undoubtedly possesses immense talent and can single-handedly influence the outcome of matches, his age and the manner in which he departed the club make a reunion unfeasible.

Arsenal currently boasts promising options in Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard on the left-wing, supplemented by the versatile Emile Smith Rowe. Consequently, the squad already possesses ample coverage in that position, rendering Sanchez’s potential return unnecessary.

As the transfer window progresses, it will be intriguing to see where Sanchez’s footballing journey takes him next if he decides to part ways with Marseille. The Chilean’s experience and skillset could still be valuable to many teams, but it remains to be seen which club will ultimately secure his services.
