Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Villarreal’s highly talented forward Nicolas Jackson appears to be destined for failure, as sources have informed Football Insider that the player’s move to Chelsea is now “90% done.”
Spurs had shown interest in the 22-year-old following his impressive performances towards the end of the 2022-23 season. However, their London rivals have swiftly taken steps to secure his signature.
Football Insider had previously revealed on Monday that Chelsea had reached an agreement on personal terms with the Senegalese international forward. The next step for the Blues is to meet Jackson’s release clause, which is estimated to be around £34 million, in order to finalize the deal.
It’s worth noting that other clubs had also expressed their interest in acquiring Jackson’s services. Aston Villa and Bournemouth were among the clubs considering a move for the talented forward.
In fact, Bournemouth had reportedly agreed to sign him for £20 million during the January transfer window. However, concerns about a hamstring injury led to the cancellation of the move.
Despite the setback, Jackson managed to overcome his fitness issues and finished the La Liga season in sensational form.
He netted nine goals and provided two assists in the final eight games of the campaign, showcasing his immense potential. In total, he scored 13 goals and contributed five assists in 38 appearances across all competitions in the 2022-23 season.
It’s worth noting that Jackson still has three years remaining on his contract with Villarreal. However, the lure of a move to Chelsea seems to have turned his head, and it appears he is on the verge of a new chapter in his career.
Meanwhile, Football Insider has also reported that Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is eager to bolster his forward options, specifically targeting a wide forward rather than an out-and-out striker.
It is understood that Postecoglou and his newly assembled recruitment team have identified players with a similar profile to Jackson, as they aim to strengthen their attacking options following the departures of Lucas Moura and Arnaut Danjuma at the end of the previous season.
In addition to their pursuit of Jackson, Chelsea has also confirmed the signing of RB Leipzig and France forward Christopher Nkunku. The 23-year-old has put pen to paper on a six-year contract, further bolstering the Blues’ attacking options ahead of the upcoming season.
As the transfer window progresses, the race to secure the services of promising talents such as Nicolas Jackson continues to captivate the football world. While Tottenham may miss out on the Senegalese forward, their focus remains on identifying suitable alternatives to enhance their attacking firepower, as they look to build a squad capable of challenging for honors in the new season.
