Arsenal Eyeing Fenerbahce’s Arda Guler as Midfield Reinforcement
Amid the speculation surrounding Declan Rice’s potential move, Arsenal is also reportedly showing interest in Fenerbahce’s young talent, Arda Guler, as Mikel Arteta aims to strengthen his squad for the upcoming season after a title-challenging campaign.
While much of the focus has been on Rice, it seems that Arsenal’s technical director, Edu, is considering multiple midfield upgrades ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, with Champions League football secured for the club.
Regarded as the “Turkish Messi” by local media, Arsenal could potentially secure a generational talent in Guler, with reports from Football Insider suggesting that the Gunners are leading the race for his signature.
Transfer expert Pete O’Rourke claims that Arsenal has surpassed fellow Premier League side Newcastle United in the pursuit of the 18-year-old and is actively exploring the possibility of a deal.
Guler signed a new contract with Fenerbahce last year, which includes a release clause of just €17.5 million (£15 million).
So, what can Arda Guler offer to Arsenal? Despite his young age, Guler has already impressed in the Turkish Super Lig, making 20 appearances alongside experienced professionals.
In his breakout season, the Ankara-born talent contributed to seven goals, scoring four and providing three assists while averaging 46 minutes per game, according to Sofascore.
Described as “magical” by members of the media, Guler has the potential to blossom under Arteta’s guidance, as the Arsenal manager has proven his ability to nurture young talents who have gone head-to-head with treble winners Manchester City.
Interestingly, while Guler stood out for his team last season, Arsenal’s captain Martin Odegaard was a dominant influence for the Gunners, earning the club’s Player of the Season accolade.
Playing in a similar role to the Norwegian midfielder, Guler could learn valuable lessons from Arteta and potentially become Arsenal’s next version of Odegaard.
There is evidence to suggest that the duo could form a formidable midfield partnership, given their creative contributions in their respective campaigns.
Odegaard averaged 2.1 key passes per game, a rate almost identical to Guler’s two key passes per game. The young Turkish talent could benefit from Arteta’s guidance while also offering support to Odegaard, who could further develop his game.
Guler, hailed as a “sensation” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, could provide Odegaard with added creative freedom, as he demonstrates composure on the ball.
With an impressive pass completion rate of 85% and the creation of seven big chances in his debut season in the Super Lig, Guler showcases his potential to significantly contribute to Arsenal’s attacking midfield.
The combination of Guler and Odegaard has the potential to strengthen each other’s game, paving the way for a bright future in Arsenal’s midfield. With these young talents in their ranks, the Gunners could establish a formidable attacking force for years to come.
