Deal close: Arsenal in pole position to sign £30m League 1 star as medical already passed

Arsenal has emerged as one of the frontrunners in the pursuit of Montpellier’s talented forward, Elye Wahi. Foot Mercato reports that the Gunners are preparing a bid for the 20-year-old striker, with AS Monaco also showing significant interest.

According to the report, Arsenal has been monitoring Wahi for several months and has identified him as a promising young talent. However, Monaco is also keen on bolstering their attacking options and is actively pursuing Wahi’s signature.

Despite Monaco’s interest, the report suggests that the club may struggle to meet the financial demands required to secure Wahi’s services. As a result, Arsenal finds themselves in pole position to secure the France Under-21 international.

Montpellier is said to be demanding a transfer fee between €30 million and €35 million (£26 million to £30 million) for Wahi. While Arsenal currently has a decent attacking lineup, manager Mikel Arteta may be considering adding more quality to their front line.

Although Eddie Nketiah has shown flashes of brilliance, he has yet to establish himself as a consistent starter. Leandro Trossard has performed adequately, but he may be viewed more as a backup option across the forward line.

Meanwhile, the future of Folarin Balogun at Arsenal remains uncertain, with rumors suggesting he may seek opportunities elsewhere. After impressing on loan at Reims in France, Balogun is unlikely to be content with a bit-part role at Arsenal.

Wahi’s potential arrival at Arsenal would undoubtedly bolster their attacking options. The young striker has been in scintillating form, scoring an impressive 17 goals and providing six assists in 32 Ligue 1 appearances this season.

Pascal Gastien, the coach of Clermont Foot, recently praised Wahi’s abilities, stating, “I think he’s one of the best strikers in Ligue 1 at his age. What I know is that he’s a very good player. Every time he plays against us, he scores goals! He’s an effective player, which is rare at his age. So yes, I think he will be a very, very good player.”

Wahi’s statistics further underline his potential. Last year, he became the youngest player in Montpellier’s history to reach double figures in a single season. He also ranks third in terms of being the youngest player to score their 10th goal in Ligue 1, surpassing the likes of Thierry Henry and trailing only Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.

Considering Wahi’s impressive performances and his potential for growth, he appears to be an excellent target for Arsenal. With a reported price tag of around £30 million, acquiring Wahi would not break the bank for the Gunners. As the transfer window approaches, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal can successfully secure the services of this exciting young talent.
