West Ham United’s pursuit of Tiemoue Bakayoko, the £40 million target of manager David Moyes, has taken an interesting turn as the midfielder has been released by Chelsea, making him a free agent.

Speculation surrounding Bakayoko’s potential move to the Hammers has been ongoing for the past couple of years, with Moyes reportedly tracking the player since the summer of 2021.

Bakayoko, 28, joined Chelsea from Monaco in the summer of 2017, commanding a significant transfer fee. However, his time at Stamford Bridge has been far from successful, with the Frenchman making only 24 Premier League appearances for the Blues. In a bid to revive his career, Bakayoko has been loaned out to Monaco, Napoli, and AC Milan on two separate occasions over the past five years.

Recently, Bakayoko was spotted at the London Stadium, attending West Ham’s Premier League victory over Leeds. In a social media post, he referred to Lucas Paqueta and Kurt Zouma as his “brothers,” indicating his existing connections with members of the West Ham team. This appearance further fueled the speculation surrounding his potential move to the East London club.

The decision to release Bakayoko comes as part of Chelsea’s efforts to trim their bloated squad, with the club under new management by Mauricio Pochettino. Despite the substantial investment made in the midfielder, Pochettino evidently had no plans for him, given the abundance of options at his disposal.

While Bakayoko’s underwhelming performances at Chelsea may have hampered his chances of securing a high-profile move, West Ham might be enticed by the opportunity to acquire him on a free transfer.

With the departures of Manuel Lanzini and the anticipated sale of Declan Rice, bolstering the central midfield is a priority for West Ham.

Bakayoko’s availability, coupled with his existing rapport with potential teammates, could make him an appealing option for Moyes. The Hammers, however, will need to carefully consider the player’s track record before making a final decision.

Reflecting on Bakayoko’s time at Chelsea, the club issued a statement expressing gratitude for his service.

“The midfielder joined the Blues from Monaco back in 2017 and featured frequently under Antonio Conte, amassing 43 appearances, including an impressive performance in the 2018 FA Cup final victory over Manchester United, where he scored three goals,” the statement read.

Chelsea’s official website further acknowledged Bakayoko’s subsequent loans, particularly his stint at AC Milan, during which the Italian club clinched the Serie A title.

As the transfer window beckons, it remains to be seen whether West Ham will pursue the signing of Tiemoue Bakayoko. With his release from Chelsea, the midfielder’s future is up in the air.

However, his connection to Moyes’ side and the opportunity to revive his career in a new environment might make the prospect of joining West Ham an attractive one for the Frenchman.

Only time will tell if this potential move comes to fruition, as clubs across Europe prepare to strengthen their squads for the upcoming season.
