In a bid to bolster their defensive options, Arsenal has reportedly made an opening offer of £30 million to sign highly sought-after centre-back Jurrien Timber, who has been a target for both Manchester United and Liverpool.
Timber, who has spent nine successful years at Ajax, is set to depart the Dutch club this summer after making 121 appearances. In an interview with Dutch outlet De Telegraaf in April, the 22-year-old confirmed his intention to seek a new challenge away from the Amsterdam-based giants.
Acknowledging the interest in him, Timber stated, “A transfer is getting closer and closer, so to speak. There is a lot of concrete interest, and I have made agreements with Ajax. Last year, Ajax asked me to stay for at least one more season and to extend my contract.”
While Manchester United and Liverpool have also been linked with a move for the talented Dutch defender, it is Arsenal who has taken the initiative by submitting an offer of approximately £30 million, according to respected journalist David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Ajax, however, values Timber at £50 million, meaning there may be a disparity in the initial valuations. Nevertheless, Arsenal remains hopeful of reaching a compromise in the negotiations. It is believed that personal terms between the Gunners and Timber have already been agreed upon, with the centre-back’s current contract expiring in 2025.
Regarded as one of the finest young central defenders in his age group, Timber brings a wealth of attributes to the table. With 15 international caps for the Netherlands, he has showcased his pace, comfort on the ball, and versatility, having also featured at right-back and in defensive midfield.
Considering Arsenal’s defensive woes last season, particularly the setback caused by William Saliba’s back injury in March, the Gunners are keen to reinforce their backline.
Timber’s arrival would provide healthy competition for the likes of Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, potentially forming a formidable defensive partnership.
As Arsenal sets its sights on challenging for the Premier League title in the upcoming season, bolstering the defensive ranks is a logical step. The addition of a promising talent like Jurrien Timber would not only provide depth but also enhance the team’s overall defensive stability.
